Beach Volleyball: Roadrunners split non-conference matches in Huntington Beach

HUNTINGTON BEACH --- Rio Hondo College returned to the sand after its opening day loss to split a pair of non-conference contests on a sunny day of action hosted by Santa Ana College at the Newland Courts on Friday.

The Roadrunners opened with a 4-1 win over Santa Ana but suffered a 4-1 loss to Ventura College to close out the afternoon.

The No. 2 team of Ariel Garcia and Faith Wada was the lone Rio Hondo squad to win both its matches. The duo defeated the Santa Ana team of Kassandra Zavala and Angela Hill by scores of 22-20 and 21-11. They followed that up with a 21-15, 22-20 win over Ventura's Savannah Marchese and Averi Carter.

The Roadrunners also got victories in the Santa Ana match from No. 1 Nadine Oronoz/Faith Lee, No. 3 Denisse Sanchez/Camila Rau, and No. 4 Valarie Romero/Haedee Estrella.

Rio Hondo, now 1-2 overall, returns to action on Wednesday (Feb. 16) when the Roadrunners travel to Fullerton College for a 10 a.m. match.
