Pitcher's duel goes to CRC, 1-0

Folsom Lake's Jenna Kendrick and Cosumnes River's Ashlee Toy, both freshmen, put on a pitching clinic on Friday afternoon at Falcon Diamond.  In the end, it was CRC's Toy that got the victory as her Hawks scored the only run of the game in the sixth inning to win 1-0.  Both teams had close chances, but both pitchers managed to wriggle out of trouble until the fateful sixth inning when a leadoff line drive off Kendrick's left shin got the inning started.  Two outs and two walks later, a foul popup behind first base managed to elude two Falcon defenders for what should have been the third out.  Two pitches later, a single to center scored the decisive - and only - run.

The Falcons' best chance came in the fifth inning, when Maddy Larson smoked a liner to center that turned into a leadoff triple when the Hawks' centerfielder made an unsuccessful diving attempt for the ball.  But Larson was left stranded at third as three straight Falcon batters popped up for outs.

The two teams will go at it again on Saturday evening at 6:00 pm, the Falcons' final home game of the COVID-shortened season.
