Sophomore pitcher Jacob Hennessey went the distance in Tuesday's 7-0 home win over West L.A. to become the first Knight in nearly six years to throw a complete game shutout. Hennessey struck out five and allowed only two hits as the Knights improved to 3-3.
Gabe Jones went 4-5 with two runs and Quinn Johnson went 2-4 with two RBI and two runs.
Hennessey was in a groove from the start as he retired the side in the first inning. West L.A. managed to get one hit in each of the second and third innings, but Hennessey and the Knights' defense did not allow either of those hits to turn into runs.
The biggest threat came in the third inning when West L.A. outfielder Ian McVey singled and then stole second. After a walk, McVey tried stealing third base, but Knights' catcher Conner Stewart threw him out, and then Hennessey got the next batter to pop out to end the inning.
In the bottom of the third, Johnson hit a 2-run home run, his second of the year, to left center field to put the Knights on top, 2-0.
City added to its lead in the fifth inning on an RBI-single from Drew Lazor and a Justin Kerby sacrifice fly to give the Knights a 4-0 lead.
Jones led off the bottom of the 7th with a triple to left field which then forced a bad throw by the West L.A. shortstop to allow Jones to score. Later that inning, Kerby came through once again with an RBI-double to increase City's lead to 6-0.
Julian Nunez put an exclamation point on the game with a solo home run, his third of the season, down the left field line in the 8th.
Meanwhile, Hennessey was still cooking as he retired the side from the 5th inning on to earn his first win of the year.
It was the Knights' first complete game shutout since April 15, 2017 when Frank Lopez accomplished the feat.
The Knights will be back at it on Wednesday with another home game against Chaffey at 2 p.m.
