Comets split day at Santiago Canyon

ORANGE, CA (3/19/2022) -- No. 7 Palomar faced No. 1 Mt. San Antonio College and Santiago Canyon College in a three-way series.

In game one, the Comets and Mounties met up for the second time this season. In a complete pitchers duel, Mt. SAC got the 1-0 win to even the series between the two foes. Third baseman Allyson Amato, shortstop Samarah Martinez and pinchhitter Destiny Cisneros were the only Comets to get a hit off the two Mounties pitchers. Farrah Steffany pitched for the Comets and allowed just one run on six hits in 27 batters faced. She falls to 7-1 on the season.

The Comet bats came to life in the second game when they faced the Santiago Canyon Hawks and got a 6-2 victory. In the fourth inning, Amato had a lead-off single and proceeded to steal second to get into scoring position. Outfielder Taylor Harrison walked and designated player Cisneros, reached on a fielder's choice after Amato ws out at third base. That brought hot-hitter Alexia Terrazas to the plate. She singled to bring home Harrison. Kelly Nutter then had a bases clearing triple to right centerfield. The fourth and final run in the inning came when second baseman Malachy Russell-Millen grounded out and Nutter scored. In the sixth inning, Russell-Millen tripled to score Nutter again. She then scored on a sacrifice groundout by Ayiana Hernandez. India Caldwell pitched the second game and allowed two runs on eight hits and recorded three strikeouts.

Palomar is now 18-4 overall and 3-1 in PCAC play. They will be back in action at home on Friday at 1 p.m. against San Diego Mesa College for a conference game.
