Hawks Open Season with a Pair of Wins
The Santiago Canyon College Softball Team opened up the 2022 season on Saturday with an 11-5 win over Cerritos College, followed by an 11-3, mercy-rule win over Southwestern College. Offensively, the Hawks were led by Samantha Villanueva who went an impressive 6-for-7 on the day.
In the opening game against Cerritos, the Hawks jumped out to an early lead posting 7 runs in the top of the first inning. Villanueva was 4-for-5 while Liliana Navarro drove in 3 runs going 2-for-3 with a double. Adriana Martinez and Riley Piattoni each added 2 hits and a double to the Hawks offensive charge. Stella Turner picked up the complete game win while the Hawks defense was led by third baseman, Alyssa Yslas, who turned 2 double plays in the game.
In game two of the day, the Hawks once again took the early lead against Southwestern College plating 2 runs in the first inning. The offense was led by Jade Costa who went 3-for-4 and sealed the victory with a walk off double in the bottom of the 5th that put the Hawks 8 runs ahead. A'mya Castaneda picked up the win, throwing all 5 innings.
Santiago Canyon will return to action on Wednesday. They will travel to Citrus College for a 3pm non-conference game.
