Hawks Remain in First with Sweep of Delta

Tenth-ranked Cosumnes River College (CRC) swept a Big 8 Conference double header against San Joaquin Delta College on Saturday. The Hawks edged past the Mustangs in game one 1-0 and prevailed 5-3 in game two to retain the top spot in the conference.

"Delta is always one of the top teams in the league, so it is great to sweep them," stated head coach Kristy Schroeder.

Leading the Hawks to victory in game one, Ashlee Toy posted her tenth shutout of the season. Toy gave up only two hits and struck out five. In the fourth inning, Tamisha McBride scored CRC's only run of the game on Danielle Pfenning's single to centerfield.

Pfenning was also key to the Hawks' win in game two. In the bottom of the first, she doubled to score McBride and Mary Bacay. Bacay helped close out the Mustangs, with a single in third scoring Gabi Lipsky and Toy. She also added an insurance run with a single in the sixth to plate Toy for the 5-3 victory.

"Danielle was the hero for the day," added Schroeder. "She had great at-bats in both games. Mary also clutched up and came through when we needed her."

CRC hosts two non-conference match-ups with College of San Mateo and Fresno City College on Wednesday before returning to Big 8 play Saturday at Diablo Valley College.
