Condor Baseball Grabs Two from VC

Condor Baseball Grabs Two from VC

April 24, 2021

Oxnard College baseball took on two county rival squads on Thursday and Saturday.

The first two-game series double-header was against Ventura College.  Oxnard was coming off a split against Cuesta College the week before to go to 1-3 on the young season.  Ventura was 4-2, on a three-game winning streak.

That streak ended against the upstart Condors.  OC jumped to a 5-0 lead in the third inning, with Nick Wolfrey continuing his red-hot hitting.  Wolfrey was 2-4 on the day, with three RBI's and a double. Michael Jester had two knocks on the day, and the Condors made the most of their seven hits, by scoring eight runs.

Trevor Hammond got the start and only allowed two runs over four innings.  Hammond struck out four Pirates, but it was Robert Schardt, who picked up his first collegiate win in relief.  Schardt was terrific in four innings, only allowing two hits, no runs, and striking out eight.

The game was extended to nine innings, when VC pushed across two runs to tie the score in the fifth inning.  With the tie scored in the ninth, 5-5, Oxnard's Wolfrey ripped a double to score Isaiah Gonzalez.  OC pushed across two more runs, to cap the scoring at 8-5.

Game Two was another exciting contest.  OC grabbed an early lead, with Taylor Trachtenberg and Trevor Hammond, leading the Condor offense.  The Condor left-fielder had three hits, including a double, with two RBI's.  Hammond had nearly the same stat-line, with one less AB.

Gavin Conary (1-1) picked up the win, going five and a third innings, giving up two earned runs.  Augustin Osegueda picked up the save, with one and a third innings, giving up only one hit.

Each team committed four errors, but with a shortened off-season, and minimal practice available, growing pains will surely be a part of the Covid-shortened season.
