Moorpark football wins home opener

There's only one stat that mattters: the final score.

Despite being out gained in total offense (441 to 310 yards), the opponent having 39 minutes of possession, converting just one 3rd down conversion (out of 13 attempts), and enduring nine penalties for 127 yards, the Moorpark College football team edged Santa Ana 34-31 in its home opener Saturday night.

Daniel Burke kicked the game-winning field goal from 36 yards with no time remaining.

The play of the game, however, came midway through the third quarter when Luis Hernandez scooped and scored a 99-yard fumble recovery for a touchdown that gave the Raiders (1-1) a 28-24 lead with 7:13 left in the quarter.

Santa Ana would regain the lead on the ensuing possession, but Burke had two straight field goals to tie and win the game in the fourth quarter.

Moorpark QB Bennett Johnston threw for 307 yards on 20 of 37 passes with a touchdown (and no INTs). Blake Batarse and Alexander Capka-Jones were Johnston's top targets through the air, collecting six catches for 119 yards and seven catches for 106 yards (one TD), respectively.

NEXT: Moorpark will travel to Mt. San Jacinto on Sept. 17 at 1 p.m.
