Softball continues to play well, defeats City College 1-0 behind strong pitching and defense

The San Diego Mesa College softball team continues to power through conference play. After the 17-0 victory over Imperial Valley College on Wednesday, the Olympians secured another conference win by defeating San Diego City College 1-0. The team sits in second place with a 4-1 conference record behind undefeated Palomar College.

Compared to the season high 23 hits against Imperial Valley College, the match-up against SD City College was a little different. Both teams pitched well, going five shutout innings. It wasn't until the bottom of the 6th inning when Jessenia Lopez connected on an RBI single into center field bringing home Jolene Giles for the game's only score.

Freshman pitcher Bailey Oftedahl (El Capitan HS) earned her third win in spectacular fashion by pitching a complete game, allowing only 3 hits, and 4 strikeouts. The defensive play of catcher Carissa Topolinski was also stellar, having no passed balls and was able to throw a runner attempting to steal.

The weather has been inconsistent to what Southern California is normally used to. However, the coaching staff does not let that deter the goal, which is to get into playoff softball. "We've had so many practices indoors this year and we keep our players engaged and ready to work no matter where we are," states head coach Jaclyn Guidi. "We have twelve games in one-month and we will continue to push our limits."

The team will travel to Palomar College on Wednesday to take on the top ranked Comets. Palomar is currently 18-0 and ranked #1 in the state. The team is hoping to be the first team to put a blemish on Palomar's record. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
