Guilfoos Slams SBVC Past Pasadena

Hannah Guilfoos slammed a grand slam to break a 3-3 tie to lift the San Bernardino Valley College softball team to an 8-3 victory over Pasadena City College on Thursday morning at the Drayson Center on the campus of Loma Linda University.

The Wolverines fell behind 1-0 in the first, but took the lead in the bottom half, as Guilfoos singled home Tara Walker. Then, with the bases loaded in two outs, Nataly Gutierrez slapped a ball that was booted by the third baseman, allowing Guilfoos to score, giving SBVC a 2-1 lead after one.

After taking a 3-1 lead in the second, Pasadena tied it in the third. In the fourth, the Lancers went to the bullpen and brought in Ivy Avalos to pitch. She was greeted by a leadoff single from Jaslyn Sanchez followed by a walk from Monique Davila. After a flyout by Walker, Aubrey Slider walked to load the bases, ending Avalos' time in the circle. Austyn Helmuth came in to face Gilfoos. She took a pitch and lofted it down the left field line, where it soared over the fence to give SBVC a 7-3 lead.

Guilfoos helped add to the lead in the sixth, driving home Davila with two outs to close out the game.

Meanwhile in the circle, Sofia Gonzalez went the distance, striking out six while allowing four hits and two earned runs.

SBVC opens conference play Friday at Victor Valley College.
