Rams edged 14-10 at Sierra

ROCKLIN – City College of San Francisco's offense couldn't get much going while the defense did all it could to keep the Rams in the game. But CCSF came out on the losing end of a 14-10 contest at Sierra College on Saturday.

The Rams got off to a 10-0 lead but couldn't hold it.

CCSF got on the board first late in the opening quarter. Jeremy Stephens led the Rams on an 11-play, 89-yard drive that ended with a 14-yard touchdown pass to Teneil Nichols at the 3:34 mark.

The Rams added to the lead thanks to a 30-yard field goal by Joseph Olivera with 8:34 remaining in the second quarter.

The CCSF defense nearly held Sierra scoreless for the first half. But on the final play of the second quarter, Wolverines quarterback Nik Goodwin's "Hail Mary" pass from 34 yards out somehow split four San Francisco defenders into the hands of Roman Floyd for the touchdown.

Prior to that scoring drive, CCSF's defense had stopped the Wolverines by forcing a turnover on downs on all three of their previous possessions.

The Rams held a narrow three-point advantage heading into the locker room at the break.

Sierra scored the lone points of the second half with 1:10 remaining in the third. Eli Mirza's 17-yard TD pass to James Mintmier would prove to be the game-winner.

CCSF had its chances late but the Rams turned the ball over on their final two possessions in Sierra territory. CCSF fumbled the ball away at the Sierra 17-yard line with 5:41 left and Stephens' pass from the Wolverines 27-yard line into the end zone was intercepted with 2:49 remaining.

Stephens completed 9 of 19 passes for 87 yards with a touchdown and interception. Aaron Espero had 5 receptions for 36 yards while Daelin DeGraffenreid totaled 3 receptions for 64 yards.

Shawn Allen led the Rams on the ground with 62 yards on 11 carries.

Tyler Lepolo put together another solid game on defense, leading CCSF with 11 tackles. He also batted down a pair of passes.

Isiah Revis added 9 tackles while Jahvius Leui totaled 7 tackles and 1.5 sacks.

With the loss, CCSF fell to 3-2 overall. The Rams will regroup during a much-needed bye week and return to action on Oct. 15. They travel to San Joaquin Delta College in Stockton to open National Bay 6 League play. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
