Softball: J. Rodriguez put up seven runs in mercy win

Huntington Beach, Calif. - A determined Rustler squad silenced Santa Monica in a five-inning 15-0 mercy rule victory on Monday.

The Rustler pitching staff put on a show for those in attendance, starting off with pitcher Sennie Viramontes, who went 3 1/3 innings, striking out three batters and allowing two hits.

For the first time in a month, pitcher Lali Rios made an appearance on the mound after serving as the DP in two games prior. Through 1 2/3 innings, Rios punched out three hitters while allowing Santa Monica's offense to snag a single hit.

"I warmed her up before the game in the bullpen, and she's a good pitcher. If you tell her to hit her spots, she'll hit her spots," Catcher Sevin Bidrwell said. "She did a great job."

An outstanding performance on the bases and in the batter's box from the Rustler offense solidified this shutout win. Every batter that stepped into the box successfully made their way to first base or beyond.

Leadoff hitter Jazmine Rodriguez continues to be a menace on the diamond, hitting two inside the park home runs in the first and second innings. She put together a hit each at-bat, shying one double away from the cycle.

"We just treated this game like any other," Rodriguez said. "We all came out here knowing we wanted to see the ball well and execute in any way we could."

This offense did just that, driving a total of 12 hits against Santa Monica. Shortstop Cienna Parker-Islas hit a fiery triple into right center, earning a RBI. Sevin Birdwell, Sara Carpio, and Lali Rios brought in a total of five runs, leaving the three other runs to be scored off defensive errors.

"I think that we genuinely get better every single game, in all aspects of our game," Birdwell said. "I think we are in a good place for our conference game on Wednesday."
