Owls Secure Third in WSC Tournament

In a battle for third place in the 2021 Western State Conference Women's Water Polo Tournament, Citrus College held off a late surge from LA Valley to win the game 16-13.

The Owls sit at 17-11 overall while the Monarchs slip to 9-11.

Gabriella Terry and Teghan Miller both led the Owls with six goals apiece, while Alyssa Woody added two goals and Averi Bishop and Sey Currie also scored. Miller also had four assists and eight steals in the game.

Four different goalies shared time in the cage for the Owls, with Mia Pfutzenrueter and Kate Carlyle each making six saves in the game. Stephanie Azizeh added four more and Samantha Messang contributed three stops.

Woody didn't waste long before putting the Owls on the board, finding the back of the cage in the first quarter off a Terry assist.

Citrus scored six more goals in the first, but LA Valley was always one step behind to keep the game close, trailing by two after the first quarter.

The Owls held a 9-6 lead at halftime but came out fired up in the second. Terry scored back-to-back goals within a span of a minute to up Citrus' lead, 11-6.

LA Valley tried to battle back, however, and scored four goals in the final five minutes of action to pull within three, but it was the closest the Owls would let them as they took the game 16-13 for third place in the tournament.

The Owls will compete at the SoCal Regional Championships next week, taking on Cypress College on Thursday, Nov. 11, at 12:30 p.m. Winner advances in the single-elimination tournament.
