The West Valley baseball team squelched a ninth-inning Modesto rally to sink the Pirates 6-5 Thursday at Valhalla.

The Vikings (5-8) took a 6-3 lead into the ninth and saw Modesto (7-5) put two on the board before Matt Atencio got Kyle Rachels to fly out to Henry Wright in center to clinch WVC's third win in four games.

West Valley jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the third on a Pako Vehikite RBI single and a two-run double from Cole Murchison. They picked up two more in the fourth as Steven Grizzle sent a 1-1 Bradley Enos pitch over the centerfield fence for his third HR of the season, and Wright doubled in Jonathan Teschner.

Vehikite provided an all-important insurance run in the sixth when he knocked in Teschner with a SAC fly to right.

Viking lefty Luke Short had a strong outing in his first start of 2020, giving up one run on five hits and striking out six Pirates in five innings of work to earn the win.

Murchison finished 2-4 with two RBI, Wright was 2-4 with one RBI and Teschner went 2-2 with three runs scored. Vehikite was a loud 1-3 with two RBI.

The Vikings head to Modesto Saturday (2/22) for the series finale. First pitch is 1:00pm.
