Dons Fall in Five to Cypress, Set to Host SCC for Third Place on Friday

SANTA ANA, Calif. - Santa Ana Softball played host to the Cypress Chargers (19-7, 16-5) in round two of the 2021 Orange Empire Conference Tournament on Thursday afternoon. 

The Dons (18-8, 18-6) earned a bye in round one after finishing runner-up during conference play while Cypress advanced after defeating Golden West 11-3 on Wednesday.

Despite seemingly having the Charger's number with a 3-1 record against them during their season series, Santa Ana was outplayed on Thursday from the start, falling behind early and eventually dropping the game in five innings by a score of 13-4. 

The credit goes to Cypress as they came to play, posting eight runs in the first three innings on primarily on well hit balls. 

Cecilia Sanchez got the Dons started with a two run shot to straight center in the third. Santa Ana showed some more fight in the fourth, scoring two more runs off a Sanchez single down the right field line. The sophomore catcher was the bright spot of the day as she went 2-2 with four RBI's. 

Emily Rosas took just her fourth loss of the year and three innings with eight earned runs and Airilin Ramirez took the mound in relief for the second time all year, throwing two scoreless innings. 

The Dons will play their last game of the year on Friday when they host Santiago Canyon for third place at 12:00 p.m. As the four seed, SCC traveled to play the number one seeded Fullerton Hornets and fell 3-0.
