The Knights came into this week's 3-game series with Palomar only two games behind the Comets and Grossmont for first place, but they lost all three, including Saturday's 11-10 loss, by a total of four runs and have now fallen five games back with nine more remaining in the season.
The Knights came into this week's 3-game series with Palomar only two games behind the Comets and Grossmont for first place, but they lost all three, including Saturday's 11-10 loss, by a total of four runs and have now fallen five games back with nine more remaining in the season.
San Diego City, now 7-9 in the PCAC and 12-15 overall, had a 2-0 lead in Tuesday's series opener at Palomar through five innings, but the Comets tied it in the 6th and then scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the 8th.
The Knights fell behind, 7-1, in Thursday's game at Morley Field, but they scored four runs in the 6th off Vito Fowler's 2-RBI pinch-hit double and Robert Lopez' 2-RBI pinch-hit single to cut Palomar's lead down to 7-5. In the bottom of the 8th with the City still trailing by two, the Knights loaded the bases with two out, but the runners were left stranded and Palomar held on for the win.
Saturday's game at Palomar started off similarly with the Comets taking a 6-1 lead after two innings, but the Knights fought back once again. They scored three runs in the 3rd inning off an RBI double from Gabriel Jones, a Vito Folwer RBI single, and a Randy Lopez-Acosta ground-out RBI.
The Comets regained a 9-4 lead after four innings, but City kept at it and chipped away with a run in the 5th and another in the 6th to get within three. In the top of the 7th, Lopez-Acosta hit a 2-RBI single which was immediately followed by C.J. Brown's RBI single to tie the game at 9-9.
Then in the top of the 8th with two out, Fowler came up big with a solo home run to give San Diego City a 10-9 lead. Palomar, however, answered in the bottom of the inning with a pair of runs to regain the lead for good.
The Knights will start a 3-game series against Grossmont at Morley Field on Tuesday at 2 p.m. The second and third games of the series will be played at Grossmont on April 14 and 15.
