Beach Volleyball: Busy day shows progress for Roadrunners

TORRANCE – It was a marathon day for the Rio Hondo College beach volleyball team on Friday. The Roadrunners competed in three matches, including their South Coast Conference opener against host El Camino College.

Rio Hondo suffered 5-0 losses to El Camino and MiraCosta College but came close in a 3-2 defeat to Bakersfield College.

Despite coming up short in all three matches, head coach Teddi Esko sees progress in her squad.

"We got some nice wins from our 1's and 2's today," said Esko. "The team is progressing nicely."

The No. 1 pair of Nadine Oronoz and Faith Lee were 21-14, 21-11 winners over Bakersfield's team of Aly Deed and Kami Mariou. And at No. 2, Ariel Garcia and Faith Wada defeated Tia Jules and Yuli Rivera of Bakersfield 21-17, 21-14.

The Roadrunners fell to 1-9 overall this season and 0-1 in conference play. Rio Hondo will look to snap its losing streak next Friday (Mar. 18) when it travels to Palm Desert for SCC matches against host College of the Desert (9 AM) and Victor Valley College (11 AM).
