Bulldogs Open Rio Hondo Series with 5-2 Victory

WHITTIER, Calif. - Evan Steinberger and Caelan Dalman powered the Allan Hancock College baseball program to a 5-2 victory on Tuesday evening in the series opener at Rio Hondo College. | BOX SCORE

The duo combined to drive in four of the team's five runs in the game after leading the Bulldogs (14-13, 5-10 WSC) to a 3-0 lead in the first frame. Steinberger started the scoring with an RBI single that plated Jacob Steels, who doubled in his first at-bat as the leadoff. Dalman followed by coming through with a two-out double that scored two runners before the inning came to a close. The second inning was busy for both sides as Steinberger drove in his second run of the game with a double before the Roadrunners (15-13, 6-9 SCC) managed to plate two. Vander Hodges registered the final run of the game with an RBI single in the fifth. 

Steinberger finished the day with a 2-for-4 showing at the plate while registering two RBIs, one hit, and one walk. Steels also tallied multiple hits, ending the game with three, and notched a pair of doubles. 

Christian Dijkman earned the start on the mound but did not factor into the final decision after two innings on the rubber. He struck out one batter and walked two after surrendering two earned runs on as many hits. Matthew Gonzales tossed the final seven and collected the win on the bump. He struck out nine batters and walked one while scattering three hits and surrendering no runs. 

The Bulldogs are set to return to action on Thursday, March 31st, at home to close the Rio Hondo series. First pitch is scheduled for 2:30 PM on John Osborne Field.
