Beavers Downed at Modesto in Series Finale

American River College could not overcome the big inning in Friday's series finale at Modesto as the Beavers lost 9-2.  ARC jumped out to an early lead as freshman LF Wyatt Bahlke (Woodcreek) singled with one out.  After advancing to third freshman LF Jonas Dyas (Folsom) scored Bahlke as his grounder was misplayed by the MJC shortstop to give the Beavers a 1-0 lead.  Sophomore RHP Matt Kelly (OakHills) made his season debut on the mound and was effective, throwing 2 1/3 innings in facing just 9 batters.  Sophomore LHP Josh Heinkel (Inderkum) finished the third inning but gave up a pair of runs in the 4th as Modesto went up 2-1.  Freshman LHP Jake Morell (Whitney) came in to throw the 5th and struggled as he walked the first batter he faced, then gave up a single on an 0-2 pitch, then walked the next batter to load the bases with no outs.  Sophomore RHP Christian Lucero (River City) came on for the third straight day and did not get hit hard, but two straight MJC hitters found holes in the infield to score two runs.  After Lucero struck out the next two batters, Modesto's shortstop Hunter Brown lined a ball to right that RF Jonas Dyas (Folsom) dove for but couldn't get, and the speedy Brown circled the bases for an inside the park home run.  The 6 run 5th inning put the Pirates up 8-1 and the game pretty much out of reach.  The Beavers went scoreless until the 9th when freshman 3B David Centeno (Roseville) pushed a bunt up the first base line to drive in a run.  ARC loaded the bases with one out thanks to Bahlke's second hit of the day but they could not get any closer as the last two batters were retired.  In addition to his two hit Bahlke threw a scoreless 8th inning, three up three down.

The Beavers will play the top ranked Delta College Mustangs next week with Tuesday and Saturday slated to be at Beaver Field with Thursday being played at the University of Pacific.  All games and times are weather permitting.
