Falcon women earn shutout victory over Modesto

The FLC women's soccer team opened their Big 8 Conference schedule with a dominating 5-0 shutout win over Modesto (8-3) on Tuesday afternoon at Falcon Stadium.  The Falcons controlled the ball and the match from the opening whistle with one glaring exception; they could not get the ball in the goal.  It was not until nearly thirty minutes of play had passed before freshman Avery Pieri took a pass from Jasmine Alvarez and scored the only goal of the first half.  The visiting Pirates, though not as fast nor as talented as their opponent, managed to play tough defense near their goal and trailed just 1-0 after 45 minutes.  With some halftime adjustments, the Falcons quickly went up 2-0 on a goal by Gigi Hall (her 6th of the season) just two minutes into the second half.  That score held for twenty minutes until Pieri added her second goal (and team-leading 7th of the season), followed quickly by a goal by Kaia MillsNyah Attaway put the finishing touches on the win with the Falcons' final goal just minutes before the whistle sounded.  Freshman goalkeeper Grace Filiau recorded her fourth shutout of the season with numerous saves against the 15th-ranked Pirates.

The Falcons (6-0-2, 1-0 in Big 8 and ranked number 6 in California) will travel to Taft on Friday for a non-conference match against the 13th-ranked Cougars (7-2) at 2:00 pm.
