Hawks Sweep Pirates Behind Strong Pitching

The Cosumnes River Hawks extended their perfect start to the Big 8 season beating Modesto Junior College 7-0 and 4-2 Saturday at the CRC Softball Stadium. Ashlee Toy struck out 11 for her third straight shutout victory in game 1, while Danielle Pfenning earned the win in game 2.

"Ashlee was untouchable in the first game. She is really pitching well. Danielle was also really strong in the circle in game two" said head coach Kristy Schroeder. "I'm also happy with the way we are hitting. The hard work that the players are putting in is paying off.  They are making adjustments that have really led to some key hits."

In game one, the Hawks jumped out to an early lead plating three runs in the first. Toy's pitching performance allowed CRC to coast until late in the game when they added one run in the fifth and three more in the sixth. Offensively, Mary Baccay led the Hawks going 3-3 with 2 RBI. Victoria Ochoa and Pfenning also had two hits and one RBI a piece.

The Hawks and Pirates were locked in a tight battle for most of game two. However, Ochoa led off the fifth inning with a single and scored on a line drive by Nicole Saravia. Later in the inning, Jennifer Bowen scored on double from Alexis Mattes. Leandra Coronado tacked on an additional run in the sixth.

CRC travels up the road to rival Sacramento City College on Tuesday, March 8 for a 3:00 pm match-up.
