Comets end season in Supers

CYPRESS, CA (5/14/2022) -- In a survive or go home situation, No. 6 Palomar defeated No. 3 Cypress College 3-1 in 10 innings to force a game three.

After dropping game one on Friday, Palomar needed to get runs across the plate and get the bats going. In the second inning, Cadee Herrmann singled to second to score Hannah Beyer for the first run. Cypress tied it up in their half of the fifth inning on a triple. With the score 1-1, the Chargers were threatening in the bottom of the seventh.

The Comets got the first out on a foul pop to Samarah Martinez. The next batter tripled. With Cypress's best batter coming to the plate and the winning run on third, the Comets decided to walk her. Then, they decided to walk the next batter to load the bases. With one out the Comets played with fire.

Two pop-ups to third later, the Comets escaped unscathed to head to extras. In the 10th inning, the Comets got back to their game. Kelly Nutter singled to the outfield and then stole second. Beyer doubled to score Nutter. Malachy Russell-Millen grounded out on a sacrifice play to move Beyer to third. Beyer then scored on a fielder's choice to give the Comets a 3-1 lead. In the bottom half, the Chargers were down to their last out. With runners on the corners, they put in a pinch hitter. India Caldwell struck her out swinging to end the game and force a game three.

Despite a strong effort in game two, the Comets could not pull off the comeback they needed to carry them to the State Tournament. They dropped game three 10-2 to finish their season.

Palomar finished with a 34-9 overall record and a 10-2 PCAC record. Along the way, Farrah Steffany recorded two no-hitters. They also had 15 shutout wins. The Comets were crowned PCAC Champions, their eighth consecutive title. Allyson Amato was the conference player of the year and head coach Lacey Craft was named coach of the year for the PCAC. Palomar also had two All-Americans, Amato and Alexia Terrazas

Congrats Comets on an outstanding season!
