Not all heroes wear capes. Moorpark's hero Saturday night came in the form of a right leg...

Kicker Scooter Caranza nailed a 29-yard field goal with 18 seconds left to give the Raiders a 44-41 win over visiting Santa Monica in a dramatic American-Pacific Conference opener.

Caranza's late-game heroics came after Santa Monica scored 17 unanswered points. The Raiders were winning 41-24 in the third quarter.

Moorpark quarterback Trae Johnson threw for 183 yards and two touchdowns on 19 of 34 passing. Trevor Jungman threw a touchdown, too. Joe Llanos led the Raiders in rushing with 59 yards and a score on 14 carries.

Theryne Jimenez and Jayden Shakir each had six receptions, tallying 74 and 64 yards, respectively. Alexander Jones, Kenneth Stewart and Jimenez each hauled in a touchdown catch.

Although the high scoring game might imply defense was optional Saturday night, the Moorpark defense had five interceptions. Daniel Pierce and Cashton Hafferty each had two.

Moorpark is now 2-4 overall, but the win makes the Raiders 1-0 in conference play. The Raiders will travel to winless LA Pierce (0-6) next Saturday. Kickoff set for 6 p.m.
