Pirates drop fourth straight in 6-2 loss to Tigers

COSTA MESA -- The ups and downs of a baseball season is reaching Death Valley levels for the Orange Coast College baseball team as the Pirates fell to visiting Riverside, 6-2, on Thursday at John Altobelli Park.

After riding high with wins in 14 of their first 18 games, the Pirates (14-8, 1-4) have dropped four straight against some of the best teams in the always-tough Orange Empire Conference.

The Tigers (16-4, 5-0) sent out another set of fireballers -- starter Anthony Flores and reliever Dakota Gray -- and the duo did their job to near perfection. Silvas (3-0) pitched six strong innings, allowing one run on three hits with one walk and seven strikeouts, while Gray closed out the final three innings and after allowing a solo home run to Kanan Treece, he retired nine straight with six strikeouts to record his second save of the season.

OCC starter M.J. Gabaldon (2-2) took the loss, but pitched well, allowing just three runs on seven hits over six innings. After allowing two runs with four walks over the first two innings, the lefty settled down and held the Tigers to one run over the next five and finished with six strikeouts.

It was a 3-2 game in favor of RCC before the guests pulled away with a three-run eighth inning. A walk and hit batter started things off and when a sacrifice bunt was thrown away, both runners came around to score. setting up the Tigers' big inning.

From there, the Tiger arms shut down the Pirates for the second game in a row.

OCC's first run of the game came in the bottom of the sixth inning. Trailing 2-0, Sebastian Moore doubled and scored two batters latter on an RBI-single by Evan Scalley

Coast and the Tigers will wrap up their three-game series at RCC on Friday, beginning at 2 p.m. OCC's next home game will be on Thursday against Saddleback, also at 2 p.m.
