Comets head back to Supers

SAN MARCOS, CA (5/7/2022) -- No. 6 Palomar pushed past the No. 11 Ventura Pirates on Saturday afternoon 4-3 after a 4-run sixth inning for the Comets.

In unfamiliar territory, the Comets found themselves down 3-0 heading into the sixth inning. Recording only one hit, which came by Allyson Amato, way back in the first inning, it seemed like the Pirates were going to force a game three. Down to their last out, something suddenly clicked for Palomar. Taylor Harrison singled. Kelly Nutter singled. Then the Comets selected a pinch hitter: Mackenzie Lefebrve. Boom. Smack. Out of the park. A 3-run shot to change the momentum of the game. All tied-up Palomar decided to keep going. Hannah Beyer singled. Elisa Haas singled. Ayiana Hernandez pinch hit and recorded a single. Bases loaded with the leadoff batter coming to the plate. Amato dinks a ball between third and short and Beyer scores to give the Comets a 1-run lead.

Enter India Caldwell to close out the game. The first batter she faced grounded out to her. Then she did what she does best: strike out the last two batters to move the Comets onto the Super Regional Round of the CCCAA State Playoffs.

The now 33-7 Comets will hit the road to face No. 3 Cypress College on Friday for another best-of-three series. Game two will take place on Saturday with game three, if necessary, following game two.
