Seven errors would usually spell doom for a baseball team.

But the San Bernardino Valley College baseball countered those seven errors with 20 hits - including seven extra base hits - as the Wolverines outlasted Mt. San Jacinto 18-12 in SBVC's Inland Empire Athletic Conference opener Tuesday afternoon.

After falling behind 2-0 in the top of the first, the Wolverines took a lead they would never lose in the bottom half of the inning. Alec Castillo led off with a single, and an out later, he stole second. Nathan Campos-Jaramillo drew a walk. Castillo was erased at third, after he was thrown out trying to advance on a wild pitch. But Guillermo Velasco worked a walk to give SBVC two on with two outs. Melchor Flores followed with a double - his first of three on the day - scoring Jaramillo. Anthony (A.J.) Mico drew a walk, but Flores got hung up between second and third. With Flores running toward third, Velasco raised home and beat the tag to tie the game. Elias Pacheco walked to load the bases, and Parker Pund followed with another free pass to force hom Flores and give SBVC a 3-2 after one.

The Wolverines broke it open in the second. With one out, Jason Lopez singled, and was on first an out later as Velasco blasted the ball over the right field fence to expand the lead to 5-2. Flores followed with a double, then scored on a single by Mico - who went to second on the throw home. Pacheco singled home Mico to make it 7-2 after two.

SBVC put up single runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings, and Mt. San Jacinto closed the score to 10-6 in the top half of the seventh, before the Wolverines' attack came alive again.

Ryan Callanan led off the seventh with a single, then stole second and advanced to third as the throw to second went into center field. Castillo walked, followed by a single from Lopez, sending Castillo to third. Jaramillo doubled under the netting in left-center to score Castillo chasing Mt. San jacinto reliever Garrett Teunissen. Velasco grounded out, scoring Lopez. After Jaramillo moved to third on a balk, Flores singled him home. Mico followed with single, and he and Flores moved up 90 feet after a pick-off throw got away. That allowed Flores to score on a groundout by Pacheco.

Flores led the SBVC attack, going 4-for-5 with three doubles, three runs and three runs batted in. Lopez was 3-for-5 with three runs and two RBI, while Mico was 3-for-5 with a run and RBI. Jaramillo was 2-for-4 with three runs, two RBI and drew two walks.

On the mound, Andres Zarate went five innings to get the win, allowing four runs and five hits, while striking out three. A series of relievers each pitched an inning for the Wolverines.
