Women’s Tennis Qualifies Two Individuals, One Doubles Team for State

CYPRESS, Calif. --- El Camino College had two singles competitors and one doubles team qualify for the state at Saturday's CCCAA Women's Tennis SoCal Regionals held at Cypress College.

Julia Jones, the Warriors' No. 1 singles player, and Danay Holman each qualified for the upcoming CCCAA State Championships as individuals. In addition, Jones and partner Kekoa Vaefa each qualified for state in doubles action.

Jones' road to state was a rather quick one as she drew the No. 4 seed and thus had a first-round bye. Her first and only singles match on Friday saw her cruising past Jade Moreno or Orange Coast College in the round of 32 by scores of 6-0, 6-0.

On Saturday, Jones secured her spot at state with a victory over Kristi Henderson of Antelope Valley (6-1, 6-1).

Holman's road was a bit more strenuous as she had to battle from the first round all the way through the bracket, playing three matches in two days. She cruised in her opening match (6-0, 6-0) against Natalie Barron of Grossmont and then defeated Kai Nikchevich of Santa Monica (6-3, 6-4) to advance to Saturday. In the round of 16, Holman defated Torrey Mateljan of Riverside (6-4, 6-0) to secure her spot at the state championships.

On the doubles side of the bracket, Jones and Vaefa drew the No. 2 seed and had Friday off as a reward. They took on the team of Haena So and Jayda Steele of Cypress in the round of 16 and scored a 6-4, 6-1 victory to advance to state.

The 2022 CCCAA Women's Tennis Individual State Championships are slated to take place on May 6-7 at Mount San Antonio College.
