CHABOT RUN DEFENSE STINGY IN SEASON-OPENING LOSS

The Chabot football team was strong on run defense in a 26-3 defeat against Shasta in Redding to open the season on Sept. 7.

The Gladiators (0-1) limited Shasta to 80 net yards rushing on 36 attempts for a paltry 2.2-yard average. Chris Bacos and Alex Lopeti paced Chabot with seven tackles apiece. Lopeti and Jeremiah Famor both had sacks. Tai Nguyen and Darriell Wells had six tackles apiece.

Chabot handled Shasta 27-7 last season in Hayward, but Gladiators coach Eric Fanene got what he expected in the rematch up north – a tough battle from an improving program. This time, the Gladiators hurt their chances by turning the ball over three times on fumbles.

Alejandro Cervantes scored Chabot's first points of the season on a 23-yard field goal late in the first half to cut the deficit to 9-3, but Shasta tacked on 17 points to round out the victory. Kai Rosero upped the margin to 23 points on a 21-yard fumble return for a touchdown in the third quarter.

Chabot will look to rebound against Sequoias in its home opener at 6 p.m. Saturday at Gladiator Stadium.

Isaiah-Nehemiah McGlown led Chabot ball carriers with 59 yards rushing. Quarterback Chayce Akaka passed for 104 yards ran for 51. Tanner Wright had a team-high four receptions for 34 yards.

On special teams, Wells had 88 yards (29.3 average) on three kick returns. Marion Torrence had two returns for 64 yards (34.0 average).
