Bobcats shut down Mesa

The Saddleback softball team improved to 7-4 in non-conference play with a 5-0 win at San Diego Mesa College on Monday in San Diego.  Desiree McGruder shut down the Mesa offense in winning her eighth game of the season.

Saddleback and Mesa were locked in a scoreless battle all the way until the sixth inning when the Bobcats finally broke through.  Mia Calderon singled to start the inning and later came around to score when the Olympians make a defensive miscue to give Saddleback a 1-0 lead.

Saddleback would add four more runs in the top half of the seventh inning, using a more conventional route.  The Bobcats had five hits and two walks in the inning, with the big hit again coming from Calderon when she tripled home Sarah Araujo for a 4-0 advantage.  Calderon would later come home to score the final run of the game on a single from Isabella Harris.

As good as the offense was, the day belonged to McGruder.  She held the Olympians to only three hits while pitching a complete game.  McGruder is now 8-8 on the season following the win.

Saddleback is scheduled to play at Santa Ana on Wednesday, weather permitting.  The first pitch is scheduled for 2:00 PM.
