Softball: Rustlers drop regular season finale to Cypress

Huntington Beach, Calif. - Rustler softball survived getting mercied by Cypress 8-1 on Wednesday, but could not rally enough runs to win the game.

"They played really hard, and I appreciate their effort," Willey said.

Center fielder Jazmine Rodriguez led the team in hitting with two hits. Down 8-0 and one out away from a five-inning mercy ruling, Rodriguez drove in the only run for the Rustlers with a single.

Lali Rios started in the circle for Golden West, pitching a total of 4 2/3 innings. Over the course of her outing, she earned five out of the six runs scored. She allowed six hits and struck out four Cypress batters.

Sennie Viramontes entered the game for 2 1/3 inning, allowing five hits, and one earned run.

The Rustlers were once again in danger of getting mercied in the sixth inning with bases loaded and two outs on the board. Left fielder Natalie Rodriguez put an end to the half inning after catching a fly ball.

Prior to this 2022 season, Willey mentioned how he wanted to create a culture of success in this Rustler softball program. He did accomplish this considering this team secured a total of ten wins, including non-conference games.

Although this team did not make the cut for playoffs, Willey and his coaching staff are pleased with the way they played this season.

"They've been doing a great job," Willey said. "They've improved every day because they work hard and they listen to their coach[es]."

NEXT: The Rustlers will play in the Orange Empire Conference tournament starting Friday.
