Corsair Football Solid Start

The Football season started with a home match vs. Pasadena City on Saturday, September 10th. The team worked hard during the summer to put their new recruits together with the talented returners. This year, like any other, is promising under coach Kelly Ledwith.

The team who scored first in the second quarter was Pasadena with a short 2 years run by Isaac Glover, after 7 plays in the drive. They failed to convert the 2-point attempt. The Corsairs managed to score back with a run of their own by Jaden Bridges, but the kick was denied, keeping the score 6-6. Four minutes to the end of the first half, Pasadena managed to score another touchdown and the extra point.

The 3rd quarter opened slow by both teams, but Pasadena scored first with a short run, followed by a missed kick. A drive after, SMC recovered with a catch for a touchdown by Jaboree Thornto after a 26-year pass by QB Forrest Brock. The kick by William Romero was good. Pasadena and Santa Monica scored another touchdown each, finishing the match in 27-20 to Pasadena city.

A real fight be the Corsairs was not enough for the win, but the spirit of the team will definitely take them far this year. The small margin loss is even more impressive considering the small roster SMC has with under 70 players.

On September 17th, the Corsairs went on a tough away game against Compton College. The two teams had an incredible defensive battle, where the Tartars scored only twice with no conversion. Once in the last second of the first quarter, and another touchdown early in the second quarter from an interception return to the endzone by Robert Jones. The Corsairs managed to keep Compton away from scoring range in the second half, but no one on the offensive side was able to make a play, and SMC finished the game without having numbers on the scoreboard.

The Corsiars will head out to Orange Coast College to play the Pirates on Saturday, September 24th at 6 pm.
