Oxnard surprises Vaqueros in WSC opener, 3-1

Trevor Hammond and Jose Contreras combined on a five-hitter on Tuesday as Oxnard spoiled SBCC's WSC North baseball opener with a 3-1 win in Oxnard.

The Condors (3-9, 1-0) have won three of four after starting the year 0-8. The Vaqueros (6-5, 0-1) had their three-game win streak snapped.

Hammond went the first five innings for Oxnard, holding the Vaqueros to one run on three hits with five strikeouts and two walks. Toby Spach pitched three-hit ball with three strikeouts in the first three innings for the Vaqueros. Mason Metcalfe (2-1) allowed three runs on seven hits over the last five innings.

The Vaqueros took a 1-0 lead in the second when DH Chase Rowe reached on an error and went to second with two outs. Ryan Guardino followed with an RBI single.

Guardino went 2-5 with two stolen bases. He extended his hitting streak to nine games. Shortstop Trevor Davis went 2-3 for the Vaqueros.

Oxnard tied it 1-1 when Anthony Magdaleno drew a bases-loaded walk in the fourth. The Condors took a 2-1 lead on an RBI double by Raul Sandoval in the fifth. They added an insurance run in the seventh when Michael Jester led off with a double, went to third on a sacrifice and scored on Sandoval's single to left.

The Vaqueros are playing a three-game series with Oxnard to open conference play. Game 2 will be Thursday at Pershing Park with the first pitch at 2 p.m.
