Win Over Feather River Highlights Hawks' Opening Weekend

The Cosumnes River Hawks opened the 2021-2022 season with a 1-3 record at the Monterey Peninsula Classic in Monterey, CA last weekend. The Hawks defeated Feather River College 3-2 while dropping contests to Monterey Peninsula College (14-1, 10-6) and Feather River (6-1).

Ashley Toy got the win versus Feather River, striking out three and giving up only five hits over seven innings. Toy and Danielle Pfenning led the team with two hits and one RBI apiece in the win. Alexis Mattis helped break a 2-2 tie by opening the seventh with a single and Leandra Coronado drove her in for the winning run.

"Ashley had a great weekend on the mound," commented head coach Kristy Schroeder. "Alexis Mattis did an awesome job of refocusing and getting us going against Feather River."

Due to COVID protocols, the Hawks were without four players during the weekend. However, Coronado, Pfenning, and Seva Carter had strong weekends at the plate.

"It was tough because we really had to pick up for the players who were missing. We really turned it around on the second day, and it would have been nice to pick up that second win because we were leading early," Schroeder added. "Overall, it was a learning weekend and will help us prepare for our next games."

The Hawks return to action February 8 for their home opener against Solano College.
