REDDING, Calif. – Shasta took one of three games against Butte College in the Golden Valley Conference opening weekend. The Knights lost the opener 8-5 Friday and split the Saturday doubleheader with a 5-1 win and an 8-2 loss.

Butte 8, Shasta 5
A two-run triple from Cole Harper gave the Knights a 3-1 lead after the first inning the opening game but the Knights gave up three runs in the second and couldn't catch the Roadrunners in the GVC opener. Kolby Button took the loss, giving up seven earned runs on 12 hits in 4.1 innings. Zac Billingsley struck out four and walked three while allowing no runs on three hits in 4.2 innings of relief. Mason Wood went 5 for 5 with three doubles, a run and an RBI, Jaden Gorge scored twice, Payton Jeffries and Nick Horsley each drove in a run and Trevor Schluter was 1 for 3 with a double and a run.

Shasta 5, Butte 1
The Knights didn't give up a run until the ninth inning, picking up their first GVC win of the year. Jordan Akins allowed five hits, struck out seven and walked three while pitching six shutout innings to earn the win. Billy Plummer got the save, giving up one run on three hits in three innings. Horsley was 1 for 3 with a home run, two RBIs and two runs, Mikey Perrine was 1 for 3 with two runs, Jeffries had a double and an RBI and both Luke Staton and Keanu Mizuta each had a hit and an RBI.

Butte 8, Shasta 2
The Knights mustered only six hits to lose the weekend series. Gorge was 2 for 4 with an RBI, Jagger Graham had a double and scored a run, Mizuta hit a triple and scored a run. Cameron Falcon took the loss, striking out four, walking two and giving up two earned runs on seven hits in five innings.

Shasta falls to 1-2 in GVC play and 3-12 overall. Shasta plays at Yuba Tuesday and hosts Feather River for a three game GVC series Friday and Saturday.
