CYPRESS, CA- Chargers baseball (5-2, 0-0 OEC) won by double-digits against the Merced Blue Devils (3-3, 0-0 CVC) on Friday afternoon.
The game began with a slow start from both offenses who managed to make hard contact but could not get runs on the board. It was not until the third inning when the home team broke through. Cole Wentz battled through a long at-bat that drew a walk and Kane Yonamine got hit by a pitch. After Luke Honikel was also hit by a pitch, bases were loaded for Dean Toigo who laced a single up the middle that put two runs on the board for Cypress. With bases full again, a Blue Devils error gave the Chargers a third run and wrapped up the busy third inning.
In their next opportunity, the home team took advantage from the wild Merced pitching staff and accepted many free bags. Albert De La Rosa singled with a runner on second and Wentz touched home. Later in the fourth inning, Toigo walked his second RBI for the day. On a wild pitch, De La Rosa crossed home plate which followed with an Edgar Rosales RBI single. Aaron Perez did his job with a sacrifice fly to center that scored the fifth and final run of the fourth frame.
Two innings later, the Chargers struck for two. Wentz exchanged two outs for a run and a wild pitch sent home Perez. When the seventh inning stretch finished, Toigo piled it on with a home run to right center field. Andre Naranjo got into the action with an RBI single that scored Trent Lyle and was the final run for the Chargers. The Blue Devils managed to score two in the final inning to break their scoreless game. Cypress won in double-digits figures for back-to-back games with a score of 13-2.
Toigo was one of three Chargers to have a multi-hit game with his home run, two runs scored and an impressive five total RBI's. Rosales had a two hit game, stole a base and touched home. Wentz used his good eye to draw three walks and came around to score twice. Evan Adolphus pitched six solid frames that only allowed two hits and struck out nine batters. Jack Pavlovsky came in for relief for two innings to strike out five and Andrew Banda finished the game in the ninth. The great discipline, patience and situational hitting from the Chargers bats separated themselves from Merced and helped to win their fifth game on the year.
UP NEXT: The Chargers are on the road for their next matchup against Moorpark on Saturday, February 11th. First pitch will be at 12pm.
