Men's volleyball team wins fourth straight, clash with OCC next

Irvine Valley, ranked No. 3 in the state, didn't look ahead Friday night at home against Santiago Canyon.

With a huge match for the Lasers at No. 1 Orange Coast next Wednesday, IVC still took care of business.

The Lasers swept their ninth opponent on the season, won their fourth match in a row and 10th the last 11 with a 25-21, 25-19, 25-15 victory over No. 9 Santiago Canyon.

The win improved Irvine Valley's record to 14-3 overall and 4-1 in conference. Orange Coast is 14-1 and 5-0 in conference and has won nine straight - eigh of them by sweep.

Santiago Canyon's record slipped to 6-9 overall and 2-3 in conference.

Irvine Valley hit a solid .375 as a team on the night Friday and ended with 50 total kills.

IVC had 18 kills in both the first and second sets.

Freshman outside hitter Karl Stenlund finished with 13 kills and four digs for the Lasers.

Freshman outside hitter Jaden Churchill added nine kills, freshman middle blocker Josh Beymer had eight kills and four blocks and freshman outside hitter Colin Chillingworth ended with seven kills.

Freshman setter Donovan Gudino had 32 assists with freshman setter Andrew Perez adding 12 assists and freshman libero Adam Schulte scrambled as usual and had six digs.

The Lasers were most impressive in the third and final set with a strong run. 

The set was tied, 8-8, but IVC scored 14 of the next 18 points. 

The Lasers took a 21-12 lead on a kill by Chillingworth and then a 22-20 advantage on a Hawk hitting error.

A kill by freshman middle blocker Brandon Bordeaux made it 23-13.

Santiago Canyon won the next two points, but Stenlund set up match point with a kill and then Bordeaux served an ace to finish off the win.
