Comets flash the leather in shutout victory

SAN MARCOS, CA (3/25/2022) -- The No. 6 Comets silenced the San Diego Mesa College Olympians on Friday ad they scored 10 runs in the second inning to win 12-0 in five.

The first run came on an error by the Mesa shortstop which scored Kelly Nutter (1B) who had a lead-off single to begin the inning. Another error by the pitcher left runners on first and second, which allowed Elisa Haas (C) to load the bases on a single.

That brought up Cadee Herrmann (CF) who had a 2-run single following yet another error by the rightfielder, which meant Herrmann ended up on second. Samarah Martinez (SS) then walked to once again load the bases. Allyson Amato (3B) then had a bases clearing double to add three more runs to the board.

Up 6-0 with one out, Taylor Harrison (RF) singled and advanced to third on an error by the leftfielder, and scored Amato. Batting around, Nutter grounded out to the shortstop for the second out of the inning, but was credited the RBI as Harrison stepped on home plate.

The Comets are still not done scoring.

Alexia Terrazas (LF) singled.

Mackenzie Lefebvre (DP) was hit by a pitch and then Angelique Shermerhorn came in as a pinch runner for her.

Malachy Russell-Millen (2B) got the final two RBIs of the inning as she tripled to score Terrazas and Shermerhorn.

The Comet offense was not the only highlight of the day. The defense behind the pitching staff made incredible players, including Nutter laying out to get a ground ball and flipping it to Russell-Millen for the quick out at first. Martinez had six total chances and for two outouts and four assists on the day. Freshman India Caldwell was the winning pitcher for the Comets and advacned to 11-2 on the season. In three innings pitched, she allowed two hits and struck out three batters. Farrah Steffany came in to pitch the remainder of the game and walked one batter, allowing no hits.

Palomar moves to 19-4 on the season and 4-1 in PCAC play. They have a doubleheader on Tuesday against Orange Coast College on the road. First game is scheduled for 10 a.m.
