Palomar bats support Domingo no-hitter

SAN MARCOS (1/29/2020) -- After waiting five innings to score the first runs of the 2020 season, the Palomar College softball team wasted little time crossing the plate in the second game of the season.

The Comets scored three runs in the first inning and added five more in the second en route to an 18-0 victory over Mt. San Jacinto in a nonconference game. Palomar (2-0) went on to collect 20 hits to support the strong pitching of freshman Alyssa Domingo, who spun a five-inning no-hitter.

Domingo, a Westview High product, faced just three batters over the minimum as she walked three and struck out seven for her first win as a Comet. Only one Eagles batter advanced as far as second base.

Sophomore first baseman Rylee Penrod paced the Palomar offense with three doubles at the plate. Penrod scored three runs, drove in two and has hit four doubles in the first two games of the season.

Sophomore right fielder Samantha Renteria was among seven Palomar batters who collected two hits apiece. Renteria slugged Palomar's first home run of the season in the bottom of the first inning, scoring Penrod ahead of her.

Sophomore catcher Kendall Kates drove in four runs with a double and a triple, and freshman center fielder Ryenne Stehly also doubled and tripled from her leadoff spot in the order. Other Palomar batters with two hits apiece included freshman shortstop Samarah Martinez, freshman designated player Jaiden Kent, freshman second baseman Maddie Loperena, and sophomore third baseman Shea Lane

Palomar was held scoreless for four innings in the season opener against Chaffey on Jan. 24 before the Comets broke through for a 6-0 victory. The Comets have scored in six straight innings going into their next nonconference matchup at Pasadena City on Jan. 31.
