Pirates score early, often in win over Dons

COSTA MESA -- Twelve runs in the first three innings helped the Orange Coast College baseball take command of Tuesday's battle with rival Santa Ana and in the end, the Pirates cruised to a 17-8 Orange Empire Conference win over the Dons at John Altobelli Park.

The Pirates also received a solid pitching performance from Chase Rousselo (6-2), who held the Dons (27-10-1, 11-8 in the OEC) to two runs on six hits with two walks and five strikeouts.

With the unavailability of their No. 1 starter, the Dons resorted to their long relievers to try and eat up early innings, but in the end, the Pirates (17-21, 7-12) knocked them around early and often. Three different players -- Tyler Weaver, Jordan Ku and Jake Taylor each had two hits and three RBI for the Pirates. Weaver, Konner Kincade and Emilio Morales each scored three runs, while Logan Jackson added two hits, two runs and two RBI.

Perhaps the most bizarre stat of the afternoon ... OCC scored 17 runs on 14 hits and the SAC pitchers still managed to strike out 16 Pirate batters throughout the game.

Game 2 between the Pirates and Dons will take place on Thursday at SAC, beginning at 2 p.m. The series finale will be on Friday at OCC, also at 2 p.m.
