The West Valley baseball team once again showed late-inning grit, but two big innings by Butte sent the Vikings to a 12-5 loss at Valhalla Saturday afternoon.

Cole Murchison blasted a two-run homer in the 7th, Jonathan Teschner sent a two-run single back up the middle in the eighth and WVC reliever Matt Atencio struck out the side in the eighth, but it was far too little, too late.

The Vikings (1-5) gave up six runs to Butte (3-3) in the top of the second and five in the seventh to fall behind 12-0. WVC put three on the board on three hits in the eighth - a Jared Reupert leadoff single, a Connor Leaverton single and Teschner's two-run one-bagger.

Atencio was nails in two innings of relief, as he sent the Roadrunners down in order in the eighth and ninth, striking out four.

Kyle Riveron was 3-4 with a double, and Pako Vehikite finished 2-4, as did Teschner. Murchison stayed hot with a 2-5 afternoon and the two-run dinger.

West Valley hits the road Tuesday (2/4) for a single game at Yuba (1-5) and then returns to Valhalla Friday (2/7) to take on Marin (1-5). First pitch Tuesday is 2pm and Friday's is 1pm.
