Cypress Suffers First Conference Series Defeat

Cypress Suffers First Conference Series Defeat

CYPRESS, CA- Chargers baseball (16-5, 4-2 OEC) lost a low scoring game against Golden West (14-8, 2-4 OEC) on Saturday, 3-1.

The Rustlers visited Cypress College for the rubber match in the three-game conference series. The first two games were played at Golden West, where the Chargers lost their first conference game 3-10 but won the second matchup 6-5. On Saturday, Cypress looked to avoid their first conference series loss.

Golden West struck first from an RBI single in the third frame for a one run lead. Though the home team led in hits, the Rustlers were on top on the scoreboard. In the seventh, Golden West added an insurance run from a solo home run for a 2-0 score.

The Chargers finally responded with a run of their own after the seventh inning stretch. Dean Toigo smacked a towering solo home run over the right field wall to cut the deficit in half. The Rustlers reacted with another run in the ninth from a bases loaded walk. The home team's scoring effort was too little and too late as Cypress dropped their second conference game on the season, 3-1.

In the quiet defeat, Toigo was loud at the plate as he went 3-5 with a solo home run. No other Charger had a multi-hit game, as six other batters got one hit on the day. Connor Wylde suffered a loss as he only gave up two runs through 7.0 frames and struck out seven. Ben Miltko came in for 2.0 innings, gave up a run and struck out one. Golden West gave Cypress their first conference series loss as the Chargers remained at third in the Orange Empire Conference standings.

UP NEXT: Cypress will begin a three-game conference series at Fullerton College on Tuesday, March 21st. First pitch will be at 2pm.
