Mistakes cost baseball team in 10-7 OEC loss to Cypress

Irvine Valley's baseball team had a two-run lead over Cypress after four innings on Tuesday in an Orange Empire Conference opener.

But Cypress answered with seven runs over the next three frames and went on to a 10-7 victory over the Lasers at IVC.

Untimely errors cost Irvine Valley. Six of Cypress' 10 runs were unearned, including both runs in the second inning and all four runs in the seventh inning as Cypress took the lead for good.

Irvine Valley committed four errors on the afternoon and Laser pitchers walked four batters and hit three others.

"We were right there," Irvine Valley coach Kent Madole said. "We just need to clean some things up."

Irvine Valley took a 5-3 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning with four runs.

Sophomore left fielder Drew Porter singled up the middle to score sophomore designated hitter Noah Madole to get Irvine Valley within a run at 3-2.

Sophomore shortstop Nick Madole then followed up with a sacrifice fly to pull the Lasers even.

Then the play of the game for Irvine Valley happened. Freshman right fielder Darren Shorter scored from third base on a wild pitch and with an error on the play at home, sophomore second baseman Nolan Cusey scored from second base.

The two runs gave Irvine Valley a 5-3 advantage.

But Cypress added a run in the top of the fifth on a sacrifice fly by Edgar Rosales and then scored two runs in the top of the sixth inning on a two-run double by Luke Honikel to take a 6-5 lead.

The Chargers put the game away in the seventh inning with four runs (all unearned) on a walk, two errors, and two hits, including an RBI double by Aaron Perez.

Cypress took a 10-5 advantage.

Irvine Valley pulled back two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning on a two-run home run by freshman third baseman Kevin James.

It was James' seventh home run of the season.

On the day, James was 2 for 5 with a walk, the home run and two RBI.

Cusey went 2 for 5, Porter went 2 for 3 with two RBI and sophomore catcher Connor Tallakson was 2 for 4.

Sophomore right-handed pitcher Sammy Murphy took the loss and dropped to 3-2 on the year. He gave up six runs (four earned) on nine hits and two walks with three strikeouts in six innings.

Cypress was led by Cade Leifer, who went 4 for 5 at the plate with a double and one RBI. Honikel had two hits and two RBI and Rosales knocked in two runs.

Josh Landry was solid on the mound in relief. The lefty pitched 4.1 innings and gave up just one run.

The two teams play again on Thursday at Cypress at 2 p.m. with the finale of the series scheduled on Saturday at noon at IVC.
