COD Football gets back on track with win at the Tartars, 20-7

COD (2-3; 1-1) took a balanced offensive attack and a solid defensive performance, grabbing a road win in defeating the Compton Tartars (0-5; 0-1), 20-7.

Desert had never played the Tartars until 2014, but have owned the home-at-home series with a record of 2-0 since their most recent match-up, which was in 2015.

Desert would get things going right off the top, scoring on their first possession of the game and leaving the Tartars fans reeling even before they had found their seats.

After a 48 yard rush by freshman running back Arieon Capler (Palm Springs H.S.) to put the Roadrunners on the Compton 10 yard line, sophomore running back Kaleb Bryant (Sierra Vista (AZ) Buena) would punch it in and after converting a point-after attempt by freshman kicker Kyle Levy (Palm Desert H.S.), Desert held a 7-0 lead less than a minute into the game.

The Tartars would respond on their next drive, scoring on a 65 yard pass-and-catch, tying the game at 7-7.

Desert would regain the lead on their next possession, when "Jersey Boys" freshman quarterback Dylan Seel (Spotswood, NJ) connected with freshman wide receiver Mwanza Fitzpatrick (North Brunswick Township, NJ) for a 19-yard score, and after a two-point attempt failed, the Roadrunners held a 13-7 lead.

Desert would score once more in the third quarter on a six-yard dump off pass to Bryant from Seel to give the Roadrunners a 20-7 lead.

Freshman linebacker Heston Wahner (Phoenix (AZ) J.C. Greenway) had a good game, with five total tackles, three solo, two tackles for loss and a forced fumble and sophomore linebacker Michael Moreno (Brawley H.S) had a huge sack for a loss of 12 yards.

Freshman free safety Brooks Stephenson (Palm Desert H.S.) had another good day harassing receivers
