Citrus College exploded on offense and tightened up on defense to grab an 8-0 run-rule victory over Chaffey College Tuesday afternoon.

The Fighting Owls grabbed their first win of the year in six innings to improve to 1-8 overall, while the Panthers drop to 3-11.

Hailee Reinert was stellar at the plate, going 4-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored. Samantha Flores also posted multiple hits in the game, going 2-for-3 with a run scored.

From the circle, Briana Poteet held the Panthers to no runs and just two hits. She threw four strikeouts in six innings to earn her first win.

Reinert led things off in the first inning with a single through the left side. Vanessa Gutierrez laid down a perfect sacrificial bunt to move Reinert over, where she advanced to scoring position on a wild pitch and came home on the next play, sliding under the tag at home, 1-0.

The Owls had a big third inning, with Poteet catching two Panthers looking in the top of the frame.

Flores led the bottom half of the inning off for the Owls and knocked a hard ball to the left of the short stop for a base hit. Reinert joined her on base with a single through the right side with one out. The Panthers caught Flores off her bag at third on the next play, but the catcher missed the tag at home to allow Flores to score, 2-0.

Citrus doubled its lead in the fifth as Isabella Ramirez drilled a pitch off the wall for a triple, sending two runners home, 4-0.

The Owls took advantage of some defensive mishaps in the sixth to seal the victory early. With runners on the corners and one out, Reinert singled to right field, allowing Melanie Barba to score. Gutierrez followed with another base hit, this time letting Felicity Mendoza score.

Chaffey looked like it would get a second out, but the first baseman took its eyes off the ball and missed the catch. Gutierrez and Reinert came home on the error to end the game via the mercy rule.

The Owls have a busy day Friday, hosting Pasadena City College at noon and Santa Ana College at 5 p.m.
