For the first time since the 2011 season, the Cerritos College women's water polo team has won their first five games of the year. The Falcons (5-0), who started off 7-0 in 2011, opened South Coast Conference play with a 16-3 win at El Camino College on Wednesday. The schedule really toughens up for the team this weekend, as they are slated to face four very good Southern California teams at the Riverside Tournament. They open with Golden West College on Friday morning and follow that with a game against the host Tigers. On Saturday, their first game is against Citrus College before closing with Orange Coast College.

Cerritos opened with a 7-1 lead in the first period and then held the Warriors (0-1, 0-1) scoreless until the final minutes of the game . Sophomore Amy Cervantes (Montebello HS/East Los Angeles College) got the scoring started with the first two of the day, while assisting on two others in the period. Freshman Mia Carbajal (Schurr HS) was instrumental in the team taking the early lead with three assists to go along with a goal, while sophomore Mayra Olivas (Montebello HS) chipped in with a pair of goals to get things going.

Four different players accounted for goals in the five-goal second period, with freshman Gabby Arenas (Montebello HS) scoring twice, and then picked up the first goal of the third period. By the end of the day, Cervantes and Arenas led the way with three goals each, while three others scored twice. Carbajal accounted for five assists in the win, with sophomore Carolina Medrano (Schurr HS) posting three assists and two steals. As a team, Cerritos registered 20 steals, with four players posting three apiece.

The goalie tandem of freshman April Nuno (Cerritos HS) and Haili Snook (Downey HS) combined for five saves on the day.
