Cassidy Leads Spartans Past Wolverines

After a slow start the MiraCosta Spartans eventually found their stride and overcame the San Bernardino Valley College Wolverines by a final score of 58-47. With the win their overall record improves to 4-5, ending a recent slump.

Early in the game San Bernardino Valley had the Spartans in a pinch but MiraCosta gained control of the game by punishing the Wolverines in the paint.  Center Kiara Cassidy led the way with 15 points, with the majority coming near the basket.  Jada Hughes contributed 9 points, also in the paint.  Acacia Denton and Cypree Stevens both scored nine points, many of which were fast break lay ups created by their defensive energy.

Not only did the Spartans control the paint on the offensive end, they also did so on the defensive end.  Cassidy, Hughes, Alexis Morgan and Emmy Wiemann all created a strong defensive presence for MiraCosta, blocking shots, helping their teammates, and rebounding the missed shots.

After trailing in the first half the Spartans took the lead late in the first half and never looked back.  Their balanced offensive attack paired with the energetic guard play of Stevens, Denton, Syme're Shelton and Abigail Aguilar helped the Spartans increase their lead in the 3rd quarter.

The Spartans are next in action on Saturday December 18th in the opening round of the Grossmont College holiday tournament.
