SBVC Rallies Back, Can't Stop Rio Hondo in 9th

The San Bernardino Valley College baseball team rallied to tie Rio Hondo College twice on Wednesday afternoon.

But the third time was not the charm.

The Roadrunners scored twice in the ninth inning to beat the Wolverines 9-7 in SBVC's second home game of the season.

SBVC opened the scoring with a two-out rally in the first inning. Nathan Campos-Jaramillo reached on an error, and went to second on the errant throw. Jason Lopez followed with a single to center to score Jaramillo and give the Wolverines a 1-0 lead. But the Wolverines left the bases loaded, after another error extended the inning, and led 1-0 after one.

Rio Hondo took the lead in the fifth as SBVC starter Andres Zarate started to tire. He walked Nolan Anguiano, then hit Aaron Gutierrez and Jordan Salgado to load the bases. Back-to-back sacrifice flies scored Anguiano and Gutierrez to give the Roadrunners a 2-1 lead. But in the bottom half of the fifth, Justin Robles led off with a triple to right-center field, then scored on a groundout by Eddie Aldama.

The Roadrunners scored five times in the top of the seventh, as four different pitchers took the mound for the Wolverines in the inning.

But in the bottom half of the inning, Robles and Aldama led off with back-to-back singles. Anthony (A.J.) Mico singled home Robles. Jaramillo followed with a double, scoring Aldama, while Lopez followed with a groundout to score Mico. After pinch hitter Alec Castillo drew a walk, he was replaced on the basepaths by Carlos Montes. After a flyout, Elias Pacheco, who entered the game in the top half of the inning as a defensive replacement, doubled home Jaramillo and Montes to tie the game.

In the ninth, Gabriel Rico led off with a double for Rio Hondo. Dylan Schumacher followed with a sinking line drive to right that scored Rico, and a misplay allowed Schumacher to make it to third. Anguiano's flyout brought home Schumacher to close the scoring.

SBVC had one more chance in the bottom half, again with two outs. Melchor Flores was hit by a pitch, and went to second on a passed ball. But pitcher Blake Johnson shut the door, striking out the side to close the game.
