Mt. SAC splits doubleheader to close out series with Orange Coast

(Walnut, CA) In a series-closing doubleheader, Mt. SAC (8-8) split with visiting Orange Coast (12-3-1) in games played on Friday, May 7.

Trailing 4-3 through five in a six-inning contest, the Mounties rallied with four runs in the bottom of the sixth to capture a 7-4 win over the Pirates. With the score tied at four in the bottom of the sixth, Cole Jordan (2-3, 3B, 3 RBI) hit a triple that scored Brent Cota (1-1, 2B, 3 R, RBI, SB), Nick Lugo, and Caleb Ellis for the win.

Ellis, Christian Enriquez, CJ Ontiveros, and Nin Burns II each stole a base for Mt. SAC.

In relief of starter Manny Cassillas (4.2 IP, 4 R, 3 ER, 8 SO), Justin Estrada (2-0) picked up the win for the Mounties, throwing 1.1 innings while striking out two.

Orange Coast 9 Mt. SAC 4

In the second game, it was Orange Coast that staged the late-inning comeback, turning a 4-2 eighth-inning deficit into a 6-4 lead with four runs in the top of the eighth. The Pirates added three more in the ninth to secure a 9-4 victory.

Art Ruiz (1-3, 3B, 2 R, SB), Christian Enriquez (1-4, 2B, RBI), and Ellis (1-3) were the only Mounties to have a hit. Jordan had two RBIs and a stolen base for Mt. SAC, while teammate Sebastian Garcia added a stolen base.

Reliever Noah Woodall (1-1) got the loss for the Mounties, pitching two innings, allowing four runs (three earned), and striking out three. Starter Noah Rinehart threw 5.1 innings, allowed two earned runs, and struck out seven.

Mt. SAC travels to Golden West College (5-11) for the first of a four-game series with the Rustlers on Tuesday, May 11, at 2 p.m. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, no spectators will be allowed.
