CHABOT WOMEN LOOKING SOLID EARLY IN NEW TENNIS SEASON

The Chabot women's tennis team received some solid efforts in a 5-4 loss to Diablo Valley College on Feb. 4.

The Gladiators' Clara Martinez, an Arroyo High graduate, took a hard-fought singles victory 6-1, 4-6, 10-8. Laila Thompson (San Leandro) won her singles match 6-2, 6-0, and Elizabeth Covarrubias (James Logan) swept her foe, 6-0, 6-0. In doubles, Alma Hwang (Perth, Australia) and Covarrubias triumphed 8-3.

The Gladiators (1-2) split their first two matches of the new season, defeating Reedley 7-2 on Jan. 31 after falling to UC Santa Cruz 8-1.

Against Reedley, Madison Majors (Alameda) won 6-0, 6-1 in singles, and Thu Nguyen (Arroyo) prevailed 6-1, 6-0. Winning in doubles were Majors and Claire Keeshan (San Ramon Valley), Martinez and Thompson and Covarrubias and Sarah Espinoza (Lapaz, Bolivia).

Against UC Santa Cruz, Thompson had Chabot's lone win, 6-3, 6-4 in singles.
