After pounding out 14 hits in the first game of Friday's doubleheader against Moorpark College, the first inning of game two looked like it was going to be more of the same for the San Bernardino Valley College softball team.
Hannah Guilfoos smashed a first-inning, three-run home run over the fence in left-center field at the Drayson Center on the campus of Loma Linda University, tying the Raiders after one inning. And both teams matched each other in the second with a run apiece.
But the Raiders picked up two runs in the top of the third that the Wolverines could not match, as they were only able to get two more hits the rest of the way to lose the back half of the doubleheader 6-4.
That came after the Wolverines were able to break open game one in the second inning. Tied at 1, the Wolverines sent nine batters to the plate in the inning, with Gizelle Mascorro, Cristina Lopez, and Jaslyn Sanchez each singling to start the inning, loading the bases. Monique Davila followed with a single of her own to score pinch runner Kaitlynn LaFleur, giving SBVC the lead. Tara Walker followed with a grounder to short, but the attempt to cut down Davila at second was bobbled, leaving everyone safe. Two batters later, Aubrey Slider singled to right to score Lopez and Davila, giving the Wolverines a 5-1 lead.
More Moorpark errors give the Wolverines a chance to widen their lead in the fourth. With one out, Audi Pettaway bunted her way on, and Guilfoos followed with a shot to the gap in right center. Pettaway slipped as she rounded third, and was caught in a run down as she scrambled back up. The Raiders chased her down, and had Pettaway as she once again broke for home, but the throw was dropped, allowing Pettaway to score. After a LeFleur popout, Lopez doubled home Guilfoos, and Sanchez singled her to third. Davila followed with a fly ball that was dropped in right field, allowing Lopez to score, and as the Raiders tried to keep Sanchez from scoring, the ball got away down the third base line allowing her to score as well.
On the day, Guilfoos finished 3-for-7 with four runs batted in and two runs scored. Davila was 2-for-4, drawing four walks, while Lopez was 3-for-3 - only hitting in game one - with three runs scored.
Sofia Gonzalez picked up her second win of the season in the circle in game one, spreading out six hits over five innings, striking out two. Alyssa Fonseca picked up the loss in game two, going four innings before giving way to Lopez, who didn't allow a hit in the final three innings, only having two runners reach base on errors.
